Digital Nomads as an Opportunity for Sustainable Tourism: First STAR Project Training Held in Mostar

09.05.2025

Thirty tourism operators from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro attended a training aimed at familiarizing themselves with the needs of digital nomads and developing tourism offers tailored to this growing global trend. The training was held as part of the STAR project – Strengthening Tourism Offers in the Cross-Border Area by Attracting Digital Nomads to Rural Regions, funded by the European Union.

During the two-day training, participants used practical tools and worked in groups to develop ideas following the “4A” model (Attract, Adapt, Amaze, Amplify), with a focus on sustainable and innovative tourism.

Digital nomads are increasingly choosing destinations that offer good internet connectivity, inspiring surroundings, and authentic local experiences – precisely what the rural areas of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro can offer.

The STAR project brings a new perspective to the sustainable development of tourism in the cross-border region. The goal of the project is to create the conditions necessary to attract digital nomads as a new target group of tourists, opening up numerous opportunities for local communities on both sides of the border.

This workshop represents the first step in a series of planned activities, including additional trainings, the development of action plans for approaching digital nomads for the involved tourism operators, organization of a conference, development of digital platforms, and overall promotion of the cross-border region as an attractive destination for digital nomads.

The project, led by INTERA Technology Park with partners from Montenegro – the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center Tehnopolis and the National Tourism Organisation of Montenegro – aims to strengthen the cross-border region as an appealing destination for digital nomads. Activities will continue through further training, action plan development, promotion, and digital tools, and the project is co-financed by the European Union through the IPA III CBC Programme Bosnia and Herzegovina – Montenegro 2021–2027.
