CODE on MeetUp: Nikšić as a destination on the map of digital nomads

29.07.2022

How does one become a digital nomad and what does that term mean – these are the questions that Liz Duong – a digital nomad from Australia, opened the new edition of CODE on MeetUp on the topic: Niksic, Montenegro: A new destination for digital nomads?

The modern era and digitization have created new professions that have never existed until just a few years ago, and one of them is the digital nomad. Digital nomads are the workforce of the new age, people who work remotely, whose nature of work allows them to work from any point on the planet. One visit to the Balkans made Liz replace the boring office life and, as she says, “do the work she loves in a location that inspires her”, which is also her definition of the term digital nomad.

According to her, if someone decides to become a digital nomad in Niksic or Montenegro, jobs that could bring income are related to creating video content on social networks, digital marketing, online sales, freelance writer/blogger and last but not least, affiliate marketing, which involves an advertising model in which a company compensates independent publishers to generate traffic or leads to products and services.

As in every working destination, there are advantages and disadvantages, so in this one as well. Looking at Niksic as a destination, Liz lists some of the “downsides” of working remotely. The difficulty that digital nomads first encounter is poor knowledge of the English language, high technology costs, complicated paperwork, as well as the inability to provide a quality Internet connection from every point.

However, according to Liz, there is a much longer list of advantages that make Niksic an attractive destination for digital nomads. In response to one question from the audience, as a primary advantage, Liz cites the proximity to the distance of natural beauty, which represents an inexhaustible source of inspiration for digital nomads. On second place there are the low cost of living, and her list also includes: fast and cheap internet, short walking distance to all destinations in the city area, kindness and hospitality, destination undetected by tourists, etc.

At the end of this very interesting event, Liz concludes that Montenegro can and should do a lot more to facilitate the stay of digital nomads, first of all solving the problems or difficulties she mentioned, but already now she would have nothing against working in Niksic as her next professional destination.
